World Hepatitis Day takes place every year on 28 July to bring awareness to viral hepatitis. This year, the theme is “Find the Missing Millions” to encourage the public to detect their disease status through screening, and prevent further spread of the virus.
Locally, liver disease is common in Hong Kong, with Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) being the major cause. Most carriers are asymptomatic, and the virus can be transmitted through blood and body fluids.
According to a study by HKU published in 2019, the prevalence of HBV in HK was 7.8%, which means for every 13 people in Hong Kong, 1 has Hepatitis B. More than half of the patients in the study were unaware of their disease status, making it even harder to eliminate the disease.
At The Central Clinic, we’re offering Liver Disease Screening and Hepatitis B Carrier Packages, as a way to bring awareness to liver health this month until 15th August, 2020.
Our packages include: general medical services; blood tests to examine liver function and Hepatitis A, B, and C status; Fibroscan to access liver stiffness; and options to test for AFP tumor marker and ultrasound of the liver.
Once liver disease is detected, a crucial way to monitor its progression is by regular checkups. FibroScan is a non-invasive way to detect fibrosis (scarring) and steatosis (fatty change) in the liver. It’s an effective monitoring method for patients with HBV and HCV, as well as for those with other liver diseases, such as fatty liver disease.
Our clinic is the exclusive private clinic in Hong Kong with the ability to use FibroScan for Spleen Stiffness Measurement (SSM which caters for liver cirrhotic patients with splenomegaly), as well as the common measurement of fatty changes as a CAP score. The simple check-up procedure takes 10-15 minutes at our clinic, and its technology allows for a comprehensive yet non-invasive solution to help patients with chronic liver diseases.
